ART IN PANDEMIA TIMES – VIRTUAL EXHIBITION – 2021

Carmen Reyes

CHILEAN – CANADIAN VISUAL ARTIST – GRAPHIC DESIGNER

As a graphic designer everything is always planned, structured, logical, measured and must have a specific purpose.  Painting these flowers with no rules or logic is what I needed at this time.

The forms and movement of these shapes are an exact representation of how I felt while creating them on days of mixed emotions: some days being tranquil, some anxious, and some even being hopeful.

¿What motivates you?

The need to express, create and experiment with materials and imagination and to experience the process of solving the visual problems that creating art represents.

Is there a connection between your process and your artwork’s message?

With consistency and patience, and delicately and intuitively applying colours, materials, shapes, line values, etc., in these uncertain times, the creation of these imaginary flowers reflects a message of fraternity and hope in these uncertain times.

Why do you use certain materials?

I enjoy exploring different techniques and materials; all depending to the theme and emotions that I want to convey.

What does it mean for you to paint with these artists friends, especially in these uncertain times?

During these times of lockdown, having a routine each week, spending a few hours together sharing about our days and painting allow us to bring a sense of order and the chaos which keeps me motivated, promotes a sense of inner peace and is healing.

I like the geometry of the flowers such a contrast to organized nature.

Reminds me of prints due to the black lines.

    Very unique!

    Dear Carmen,
It is a pleasure to observe your paintings. No matter some people might think flowers could be common topic , the combination of colors that you use is beautiful. I specially liked “Alive” and “I am here” for how you combined warm and cold spectrums making your paintings seem as a degradation of spring into summer.
    Congratulations!
